Well guess what?

The State of Maryland has given $250,000 to Columbia to start building this park in Symphony Woods near the Central Library.  According to the Columbia Association, this park “will be a bold gateway to the woods and the [Merriweather Post] Pavilion, and for the first time, a year round destination as a park.”

How did Columbia get all this money?

You know how your parents always have to pay those taxes?  Well, some of that money goes to the state government, which they use to build projects and fund services all over Maryland, and some of the money they give to local governments to build their own projects.  Senators and representatives write bills to propose their ideas and the State Senate and State House of Representatives vote on whether they agree to fund those ideas.

State Delegate Liz Bobo and State Senator Ed Kasemeyer, Vice Chair of the Maryland State Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, worked hard to convince the state of Maryland to give Columbia this money.

When will the Park be Built?

This is a good question.  The Columbia Association has to go through many steps to get the park approved and started.  You can read about the plans and follow the progress by clicking on this website:

How does this sound…

A big water feature that you can run through and get the sensation of ice running           down your back on a hot day ,
A café where you can go to eat after you are thoroughly cooled and hungry,
A garden where you can see native and woodland plants
A children’s play area where you can run around and have fun with your friends
And benches to sit on under some shade trees and relax,

…all in the middle of downtown Columbia?
