There is an old Hindu proverb about five blind men who were introduced to an elephant.  Each touched the elephant and began to tell the others what they found.  The first one encountered the side of the elephant and explained, "An elephant is large and mostly flat, like the side of a tent."

Another, who had taken hold of the tusk, disagreed, "But no, the elephant is long, hard, curved and pointed like a warped fencing post."  The third felt the leg and described a "large pillar."  The two who felt the tail and the trunk insisted it was like a snake and a rope.  Standing around the elephant, the five men continued to argue what they knew to be true, unaware that had they worked together they would have been able to fairly accurately "CONSTRUCT THE ELEPHANT".
The first amendment of the United States constitution gives citizens freedom of speech.  Do you think this also gives people or politicians the right to be rude to each other when they talk about politics?  And if you think people have the right to be rude, do you think it is a good way to take care of our country’s business and solve our problems?
I think you can be rude because freedom of speech allows you to say whatever you want.  The politicians have to be responsible for what they say though.  --Ethan
I think people should not say attacking statements to their opponents because people need to be nice to each other.  That way, it will be peaceful among people.  --Avery
I don’t think they should be able to, because it isn’t really fair to the other person, and it can arouse large fights.  --Kate
No!  Every person is equal and deserves respect!  People can think whatever they want.  But not be able to say it!  --Beth
No, because they are human and shouldn’t be talked to like that.  They shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.  It is like saying someone who is on drugs is a bad person.  --Zoe
I don’t think it is necessary to lie about your opponent because if you are doing a good job yourself, people will vote for you.  Also it might affect their future.  --Carly
I think candidates or political figures should not be able to say mean things about other political figures because everybody is a person.  Politicians should respect other people’s opinions and beliefs.  Also people should not even need to be rude to other politicians to get into the position that they are running for.  --Sean
It depends on the situation.  I think politicians should always tell the truth.  But, if their opponent actually did something bad, it would be fine to get mad.  When regular people talk about politics, I think they should respect people’s opinions.  --Rosa
I think they should not say negative things that are untrue (about the opponent) because it can make people think badly about that person.  Regular people shouldn’t do it either.  --Katie
What do you think?
