Do you have any superstitions? Has a superstition ever affected your life? Do you like fairy tales? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you will enjoy East.
This book is an interpretation of the fairy tale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon." It is about a girl named Rose who lives in a large family on a farm in Norway. When her family begins to face tough time, a polar bear comes to their small house. It asks to take her with it in exchange for giving the family better luck. Rose agrees to go because her mother has always tried to repress her want to explore.
The bear takes Rose to a hidden castle, where she is visited by a strange man. Everything is mysterious. She wonders who the man is and tries to figure out why she's there. Finding the stranger's identity changes her forever, but it is only the start of a long journey.
This book has a good concept, and it is a fun read. The beginning when Rose is with her family is really interesting. Her mother has superstitions about the direction that your mother is facing when you're born. She believes that it determines your personality. This makes for a cool plot device. My only complaint is that I think the plot drags a little near the end. East by Edith Pattou is a very interesting book, and you should read it!
