The Forgotten City

And it stayed buried like that for 1600 years, till it was found in 1749.  Since then archeologists have been excavating it, uncovering buildings, streets and artifacts that show exactly how people lived and what they were doing that dreadful day in 79AD.  Now you can go to Pompeii and take the city walk.  You can see body cask pots and animal skeletons.

Pompeii was founded in the 8th century BC and was occupied by the Etruscans, Saminites and Romans.  It lay buried nearly twice as long as it existed.  People eventually forgot it was there.

Talk About A Bad Day!

One very normal day in 79 AD the 20,000 residents of Pompeii, a coastal city in Italy, were going about their business, cooking, eating, buying and selling, running errands, tending to the sick, and caring for children.  Then nearby Mt. Vesuvius erupted and as the ash and soot arrived from the angry volcano, the entire city was buried in 10 minutes.  Over the next two days 13 – 20 feet of ash and pumice rained down on the city.  Originally historians thought people were killed by ash suffocation but now some experts think they were killed instantly by the powerful heat given off by the eruption.

When You Plan Your Trip to Italy,
Visit Pompeii!

My family and I had a wonderful time in Pompeii and loved the sights.  .I recommend going to this city if you like learning about culture and having fun.  It is like opening the covers of a book and literally walking into history.
