If you think following politics is boring, think again. Politicians try to give voice to the people they represent. How would you like to represent thousands or millions of people with a gazillion different ideas? Look here each month to find out about our elected leaders and what they are doing. Go the the Letters to the Editor page, write to "Dear Ethan" and let us know what you think.
Hi Kids,
This month the Maryland General Assembly began its 428th session in Annapolis. We got a special letter from State Delegate Liz Bobo about what she will be doing this session. Read it and write back to let her know what you think is important for us to be doing in Maryland.
Then do the Crossword Puzzle and see how much you know about our state government! Answers will be included in the next issue.

Hello from Annapolis to All of You Columbia Kids Back Home,
As many of you know Maryland’s legislature meets from mid January through mid April every year to write and pass laws that help us govern our state.
I am working in Annapolis, where the legislature meets, for the next several months so I can focus on the needs of people in Howard County, as well as the state of Maryland.
This year I am also going to focus on several issues. I want to make sure:
•Political campaigns are fair and people with a lot of money don’t get to have more power just because they have more money,
•We use clean energy as much as possible to help improve the health of our environment
•Banks and other financial institutions are fair to the people they serve
•We can make it affordable and possible for everyone in Maryland to get health care
The beginning of every session is exciting, but this year we have a big problem. Many of you probably have heard adults talk about the “recession”. A recession is a time when people lose jobs and then have a lot of other problems because they don’t have money. When people lose jobs they also can’t pay taxes to the government, and then the government has trouble paying for the services the citizens need and expect.
However, I have a deep belief that people are basically good and that we, your elected officials in the Maryland State Government, can work together with respect and dignity, and solve our problems so that everyone has the opportunity to live life with dignity.
If you would like to tell me what you think is important for me to do this year, please write a letter with your class and let me know. You are our future leaders and citizens and it is good if you start thinking now about how to take care of our shared business and think about solutions to our problems.
Peace.
State Delegate Liz Bobo
