Dear Kids:
Remember our story from last time? We asked you to write to us and tell us what happened to the calico cat before she came to The Pet Shop. I have included it below to refresh your memories. Keep reading to see how the readers finished our story and then check out my complete story at the bottom.
My mom and I were in the mall doing some shopping. As we neared the pet shop I took a deep breath and smelled fur. Then in the front window I saw the sleeping puppies, which were so cute we both turned to go in as if we were in a trance.
Once inside my mom went to check out the pet books. I went to see the cats. I saw a beautiful, young female calico cat hiding in her cage. She had a scar running down her face that looked like a lightning bolt. As I watched her she turned toward me and seemed to be saying, “Please take me home.” “I’m not the one you need to convince,” I said and looked over at my mom.
A plan began to develop in my head. My mom is a sucker for my sad puppy dog face with a droopy mouth and big eyes. I concentrated on putting my best puppy face together, but decided first to discover the history of this striking creature.
I found the manager and asked how the calico got her scar. He said…

The manager said that the cat was a super agent spy (named Fluffy) involved in a Secret Mission to attack Dr. Bulldog, who had a special plan to destroy the cat species. Agent Fluffy came in a window and punched Dr. Bulldog.
“That hurt!” said Dr. Bulldog.
It’s supposed to hurt,” said Agent Fluffy.
“You know what? I give up!” said the doctor.
“Good,” said the agent.
And that was one of the adventures of Fluffy’s life before he came to the Pet Shop.
“This cat was very special.” The manager said. “Her previous owner was very kind, so don’t think he did that to her!”
“Oh, so what happened then?” , I asked?
“Well, one night her owner was going out to dinner with friends. Right after they left, this calico must have heard something in the living room and decided to investigate. As it turns out, there was a thief in the house!”
"Oh my gosh, was anything stolen?" , I asked.
"Now now, let me finish" , he said.
"That cat must have been very protective of her owner, because as soon as she saw him, she ran over and sunk her teeth right into the thief’s leg. He screamed in terror, and fell out of the open window."
"Wow, that cat is mighty brave, thanks for telling me about her" , I said.
I walked over to where my mom was. I knew that she would absolutely let me get her!
That cat has a big history, the manager said, “One that could fill up a two big books. She was found by a man named Scruffy McGuire. He didn't like cats, so he took it to an orphanage. A bad man named George Hatters took him to a factory for testing. When the cat finally escaped the factory, he had a bad old scar, and that's where I come in. I found him and took him in.”
"Well", the manager said, “The cat was riding with his owner, who was a famous movie star, in his Porsche 911 GT3 when he was in a terrible car accident. The owner did not survive but the cat did. That’s how he got his scar.”
“Well it started when she was living on the streets with a lot of other cats,” the manager said. “She was the youngest so she always got in fights with other cats. One day she got in a fight with a wild calico named Jordan. She pounced on Jordan and started scratching. Jordan pushed her off and scratched her and she got that mark there. She’s been through a lot and they are talking about putting her to sleep so it would be really nice if you could take care of her.”
“MOM, did you hear that? Can I get her please,” I said.
“Yes, yes you can,” she said.
The manager said that the cat was abandoned by its owner and walking around in the cold, dark, and stormy night, while the branches were shaking. Then a huge branch came and landed on the poor, helpless little creature.
I asked myself who would be so mean and vile.
The manager said, “The cat was found in a barn on a farm that belonged to Harry Mitchell in Williamsport. He didn’t know that his cat had given birth till he went to the barn to check on his calf. He found one little kitten with its eyes not even open yet. With a disgusted shake of his head, Mr. Mitchell said his cat, Sadie, was always a miserable mother and instead of taking care of her kittens, she sat and groomed herself all day at the Sadie Kitty Spa. Mr. Mitchell fed it some milk with a medicine dropper and made a little bed of hay. He left it there overnight, but during the night a coyote got into the barn. The calf ran away but the kitten couldn’t see yet and accidentally scratched herself as she swung her paw at the coyote. Somehow she survived the coyote and Harry Mitchell took her to the vet the next day and then gave her to our pet shop.”
“Can I have her, Mom,” I asked?
“Well you would have to love and care for it every day, clean the litter box and feed it. Can you promise to do this?”
“Yes, I can,” I said. So we got supplies and took her home. I decided to name her Summer because she looks so lively and happy.
