Belgium is a really easy place to travel to. It is safe, the government is democratically elected, the people are nice, and a lot of them speak English, although the official languages are French and Flemish. I don’t know any Flemish, but I know some French, and everywhere I went with my family, we were able to talk to people and communicate.
Belgium is a member of the European Union and it is in the Eurozone. Like fifteen other European countries, Belgium’s only currency is the euro. Right now, one dollar costs 1.42 euro.
Some of the places you should visit in Brussels are the Atomium, Mini-Europe, and the Brussels Cathedral. Outside of Brussels, you can also visit Waterloo, a pretty town where Napoleon lost to Britain in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The Atomium is a huge sculpture of an iron atom that you can go into. You can go up escalators to go higher but you have to go up an elevator to go to the very top. It is 335 feet tall. The Atomium was built in 1958 for the Brussels world fair. We saw people ziplining off the top of it.
Mini Europe is a place where they have built a mini model of a place from every European union country. For Belgium they have the Brussels town square. It looks just like the real thing but is much smaller.
You should also go to Waterloo. It’s a cool town because you can visit the place where the battle of Waterloo took place. In that battle Napoleon got defeated by the British. It’s a very cool place!
Another great thing about Belgium is the awesome food! They have the world’s best chocolate, and there is a chocolate shop on almost every street! My favorite chocolate shop is Neuhaus. Brussels also has great waffles. When we were there we found a restaurant with a “Waffle Window” that you could walk up to and order a waffle. You could choose from many different toppings. Another special dish in Brussels is mussels and frites (French fries).
The Brussels cathedral is a beautiful building, which took 5 centuries to complete – begun in the eleventh century it was completed in the sixteenth century. The architectural style of the cathedral is Gothic. That means it has lots of pointed archways and the façade has lots of stained glass windows. In the basement we saw the architectural ruins of the original Roman church on that site.

Belgium is in the continent of Europe and is bordered by Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the North Sea. I visited the capital city, Brussels, in 2008, and I had fun there.
